Background
Calder Geotechnical was established by Kaandeepan Vinayagamoorthy after more than 14 years in the construction and consulting industries, including project work in Singapore.
Working across Victoria, New South Wales and South Australia, he has built deep expertise in geotechnical engineering, pavement engineering and infrastructure asset management. That expertise rests on a working knowledge of local geology, gained through hands-on field investigation across a wide range of infrastructure projects.
His experience spans residential subdivisions, commercial developments, transport infrastructure, solar and wind farms and, more recently, data centres. He is known for practical, cost-effective solutions for water and sewer infrastructure, road assets and civil developments.
Pavements
Pavement investigation is a particular interest: sealed and unsealed, flexible and rigid. Kaandeepan works fluently with local council standards and with the pavement design and material specifications of DTP in Victoria, TfNSW in New South Wales and TMR in Queensland.
He has contributed to a significant number of council and state road projects, including temporary traffic diversion packages on the North East Link and a range of intersection upgrades delivered through Major Road Projects Victoria, now part of VIDA.
Water and sewer
Kaandeepan has supported Victorian water authorities at every stage of project delivery, from scoping geotechnical investigations through to completed works, including authority liaison and permit approvals.
His projects include water and sewer treatment plants, and geotechnical investigations for trenched and trenchless pipelines. These investigations combined traditional intrusive boreholes with geophysical surveys. Correlating the two, and reading the results against local geology, gives a continuous picture of ground conditions between boreholes rather than a set of isolated points, a better outcome for both the client and the civil designers.
Working with civil design teams
Kaandeepan has worked within multidisciplinary teams throughout project delivery and understands where the disciplines interface and clash. As the geotechnical and pavement signatory (RPEV and RPEQ), he has been involved in preparing and reviewing drawings.
He has a working understanding of road geometry, traffic, drainage and water infrastructure design, as well as data centre, wind farm and substation layouts. That lets him make geotechnical and pavement decisions with the whole multidisciplinary design in mind.
He has also helped multidisciplinary teams review tender designs, identifying geotechnical and pavement scope, and potential clashes, earlier in the design stage.
Local industry knowledge and collaboration
Kaandeepan's connections across the geotechnical and pavement industry make it straightforward to engage the right contractors and sub-consultants for each project in Victoria, South Australia and New South Wales. He works with local drilling contractors, traffic management contractors and utility scanning subcontractors, which makes it easier to operate across these regions.
He also works with a network of laboratories across the same regions, and with consultants who carry out soil contamination assessments. That allows combined geotechnical and contamination investigations, which on some projects are the most cost-effective choice when planned at an early stage.
Working with Kaandeepan
Engaging Kaandeepan brings this experience together with a problem-solving approach built on matching investigation scope to project risk, rather than applying a standard geotechnical or pavement investigation template. The investigation targets the questions that drive your design and your cost.
